The chart first appeared in 1714 in Thornton's Coasting Pilot with an imprint at the bottom. 1714 A New & Correct Large Draught of PLYMOUTH SOUND CATT=WATER and HAM=OWSE Imprint: By Saml Thornton Hydrographer at the Signe of England Scotland & Ireland in the Minories 450 x 545 A Scale of Two English Miles (1M=79mm) (1:20,110). Post 1745 the chart without the imprint was sometimes used instead of Collins' chart, by Mount in Collins'Coasting Pilot. Once he included both Plymouth charts. In 1785 and 1792, again in Collins', it appeared with the addtional rocks in the Sound

Condition: Good, bold imprint, later hand colouring, printed on heavy grade paper, some faying to bottom corners of margins, slight crease bottom right. Very scarce.

Samuel Thornton (d.1715)
Related to the well known English map maker of the 17th and early 18th century John Thornton. Re- issued John Seller's English Pilot (book III) in 1711 and subsequent issues up to c. 1761.
